In the rich tapestry of American musical history, certain songs stand out as iconic representations of a genre’s spirit and mastery and reach across the aisle to fans of every musical genre and style and become true standard of the global songbook and so today we enter another one of these masters into our show the new standards… songs that go beyond genre, or fad or generation, songs that are monumental touchstones in our culture. "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" by Charlie Daniels Band is an outstanding example of such a song. and the truth is this song is beloved by everyone… No matter if you’re a headbanger or a cowboy…a New Waver or a Punk, a Mod, or a straight edger.

Narrated by one of America’s great story-tellers, the late Charlie Daniels, The Devil Went Down to Georgia is a fusion of Southern Rock, country, and bluegrass that transcends mere entertainment, delving into the age-old theme of the struggle between good….a boy named Johnny…and evil…the Devil himself. Charlie Daniels was born in the Tar Heel country of Wilmington, North Carolina. When Charlie was a young boy, he dealt with a serious case of measles that damaged his vision. In order to see, he had to wear what some would disparagingly call “coke bottle glasses,” that led to constant bullying around the schoolyard. and so Music became an escape from his affliction.

Charlie was heavily influenced by Pentecostal Gospel singing, bluegrass, and Rhythm & Blues. He also loved those good ol’ Western Movies. Before his teenage years, Charlie was already skilled with many of the stringed instruments- the guitar, fiddle, banjo, and the mandolin. He began his career as a member of the bluegrass band, Misty Mountain Boys, in the mid-50s. He learned to rock in the 60s and formed his own band named the Rockets, later changing the moniker to the Jaguars after putting out a mild hit with an instrumental of the same name. It wasn’t long after the demise of the Jaguars that Charlie became a sideman, writing and playing for some very notable performers, such as Elvis Presley.
