When Did Kashmiris Convert to Islam? Rethinking the 14th Century Narrative | Meeras Podcast

The conversion of Kashmir to Islam is often projected as a medieval, 14th-century phenomenon. In reality, for many Kashmiri families, including prominent figures like Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah, conversion is far more recent, tracing back to the Sikh and Dogra periods.

Historical records, Rishnamas, and Tazkiras reveal that conversion was a gradual social process, shaped by personal interactions with saints and faqirs such as Baba Bamuddin and Baba Naseebuddin, alongside economic, political, and social pressures.

To reduce this history to either pure spiritual attraction or complete absence of coercion is inaccurate. Kashmir’s religious transformation was complex—driven by faith, influence, circumstance, and power, unfolding over centuries rather than a single moment.
