AP exclusive interview with former Pakistani leader Nawaz Sharif
(30 Aug 2007)

2. SOUNDBITE: (English) Nawaz Sharif, former Pakistani leader:
"If a deal is struck between Benazir Bhutto and Mr Musharraf it will not serve the cause of restoring democracy to Pakistan. It will only be strengthening the hands of a dictator, and we want to get rid of the dictatorship in Pakistan. We don't want any further army rule in Pakistan so any give and take with Musharraf whose wearing two hats, one that of the army and the other of the president of the country, will only strengthen his hands, which is very unfortunate."

4. SOUNDBITE: (English) Nawaz Sharif, former Pakistani leader:
"Well, I will be returning soon, we have discussed that at length at our party meeting."

6. SOUNDBITE: (English) Nawaz Sharif, former Pakistani leader:
"And Benazir Bhutto is also in agreement with us, in fact she has signed an agreement with us, which is in other words called the Charter for Democracy, which very clearly says that there can't be any negotiations or parleys (talks) with dictators. So I think that would be a gross violation of that document and she has put her signatures on that."

8. SOUNDBITE: (English) Nawaz Sharif, former Pakistani leader:
"Well, I don't know what is the relationship between America and Musharraf but we want restoration of rule of law, this is all that we are struggling for. The country is fed up with military dictatorship in Pakistan. The nation is fed up with this military dictatorship in Pakistan and the country is in a very deep crisis and we think that the only answer to the problem is to go back to democracy."

10. SOUNDBITE: (English) Nawaz Sharif, former Pakistani leader:
"The whole civil society, the entire nation, the lawyers, the intelligentsia, the media is all united on this issue and they all want to get rid of Mr Musharraf, they all want to get rid of dictatorship and they want rule of law back in Pakistan."

12. SOUNDBITE: (English) Nawaz Sharif, former Pakistani leader:
"I don't know what is going on between Mr Musharraf and Benazir Bhutto and I don't know what is the need to talk to Mr Musharraf at this stage when he has lost all his popularity and his government writ is no longer visible anywhere in Pakistan. Why a deal at this stage? That is my question. And what purpose is it going to serve. This is my question."
13. Sharif and colleagues walk into hotel
STORYLINE:
Former Pakistani leader Nawaz Sharif will return home from exile on Sept. 10 and challenge President Gen. Pervez Musharraf's plans to extend his rule, Sharif's brother said on Thursday.
Shahbaz Sharif confirmed the date before a news conference in London called to lay out the former prime minister's timetable for return after eight years in exile.
Sharif left Pakistan shortly after being deposed by Musharraf in 2000.
The planned announcement comes a day after Benazir Bhutto, another exiled former premier and Sharif's rival, said she was progressing toward an agreement with Musharraf that could see them share power.
Bhutto claimed Musharraf had agreed to step down as head of the army, ending military rule eight years after the general ousted Sharif in a bloodless coup.
Sharif told Associated Press he rejected the idea of an agreement.
