Ahmedabad’s Kharicut Canal set to become six-lane corridor

The British-era Kharicut Canal in Ahmedabad, built in 1881 for irrigation, is undergoing a major urban transformation. Once reduced to an open drain, the 80-km canal is being redeveloped into a six-lane mobility corridor to link north and south Ahmedabad. The project also aims to address urban challenges like waterlogging and waste management. Hailed as the city's second-most significant urban initiative after the Sabarmati Riverfront, the first 12.75-km phase is nearly 80% complete. On March 11, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel approved ₹1003 crore for Phase-2. Scheduled for completion by 2027, the project is set to enhance mobility, urban hygiene, and climate resilience, reviving a colonial-era asset into a modern infrastructure marvel.
