What to call in-laws in Russian: Russian vocabulary for relatives by marriage

For many people, love appears to be the main motivator to study Russian… and sometimes love grows into a marriage (there are such documented cases).

After marriage, alongside with acquisition of a spouse, you also get a handful of new relatives from the side of a partner. For example, Friedrich Engels, one of the fathers of Marxism and, therefore, communism, loved his in-laws so much that after his wife passed away, he married his wife’s younger sister.

In this video, I am going to prepare you for the vocabulary side of relationships with relatives-in-law.

While in English, such vocabulary is based upon the usage of the word “in-law,” in Russian we have dedicated words for each of the new relatives from the side of a spouse. Moreover, for a husband and a wife, those words differ.

Since it is impossible to remember today’s material at one go, in addition to the video, I’ve prepared for you a PDF that will help to remember what to call your in-law relatives.
