Charles Woods aka The Professor - Slave Rebellion in the Movies

In anticipation of Nate Parker's THE BIRTH OF A NATION, Film Historian/Archivist CHARLES WOODS (aka The Professor) offers a brief survey of films depicting Slave Rebellion. Films discussed are SO RED THE ROSE (1935), THE FOXES OF HARROW (1947), CARIBBEAN (1952), LYDIA BAILEY (1952), BURN! (1969), ROOTS (1977), DRUM (1976), GOODBYE UNCLE TOM (1971), 12 YEARS A SLAVE (2013) and DJANGO UNCHAINED (2012). He also introduces his concept of "circumscribed historicity, " in which Black characters are expected to reflect historical truths, where their non-white counterparts are not always held to that standard. A Reelblack Exclusive. Camera and Edit: Mike D. Archival Research: Charles Woods.
