Syntell and Mikel-Claire react to Widow's Bay, Season 1, Episode 1 — "Welcome to Widow's Bay!" The island has been keeping its secrets for a long time. An earthquake rattles Widow's Bay just before dawn. The lights go out. The birds leave all at once, fast. A fisherman named Seth Clark disappears into the fog offshore, and by the time the mayor's office is dealing with the power outage, the missing man, and the New York Times travel writer who just stepped off the ferry, the island is already having a very bad morning.

Tom Loftis — the mayor, not from here, never fully forgiven for it — has plans for Widow's Bay. He wants summer tourism, a write-up in the Times before booking season, and a future worth staying for. Standing in the way is Wyck Crawford, who has been warning about exactly this kind of morning for longer than anyone wants to acknowledge. Wyck wants the port closed, the businesses shuttered, and the siren sounded — the one from the 1940s. Tom dismisses him. The island does not. Seth Clark turns up alive but unrecognizable: charted at 37, looking like he's been at sea for sixty years, white-eyed and barely present. The historical society confirms the founding: settlers arrived, the island was empty "except for the teeth," and in 1846, a fog they called the one that stole souls swept through — set in motion by a mayor who shuttered the lighthouse to wreck a ship, because he wanted the captain's young bride. The crew of the SS Mary has been waiting sixty-two years. Evan, Tom's teenage son, is the only one born and raised here — which means, if the stories are true, he can never leave. Underground tunnels run three floors below the restaurant. One of them has an electric chair. The fog rolls in with the evening. Something is moving in it.

Post-reaction: Syntell and Mikel-Claire came in knowing nothing and came out "wonderfully lost." Matthew Rhys surprised them both — they'd watched him be dark in The Beast in Me, but he's working a different register here, darkly funny and immediately compelling. The question neither host can settle: what is Tom actually doing? Mikel-Claire's theory is that the tourism push is less about the island than about Evan — Tom knows his son can't leave, and if Evan can't go to the world, maybe Tom can bring the world to him. The biological age detail is unresolved: Tom's assistant claims to be 28, Seth Clark is charted at 37 but looks ancient. Something on the island is collecting time. The electric chair three floors under the restaurant is not explained. Wyck Crawford is not wrong. And whatever is in the fog already has Shep.
