After breaking the glass ceiling as one of the first five women in the Secret Service, Kathryn Childers became a different kind of bodyguard when her beloved husband was diagnosed with Alzheimers. Each assignment brought different supplies she packed all in a stylish purse. Encouraging all through her wit, experience, and authenticity- Kathryn highlights the dichotomy of caring for a loved one and serving to protect some of the world's most important people. Looking back on both missions in her life, she reveals a crucial lesson that everyone can benefit from. In 1971, Childers joined the ranks of 1,100 male Secret Service investigating counterfeit claims, working undercover, and protecting President John F. Kennedy and other world leaders. She specifically protected President Kennedy’s children when they traveled with the First Lady. Members of the Kennedy family fondly referred to Childers as “The Pistol Packin’ Nanny.” Childers history-making accomplishments have led her to live an especially interesting life filled with both fascinating and inspiring stories. She shares her secrets to success with all ages and promotes her personal mantra: “Do it scared!” This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
