Carrageen is a seaweed which grows on the rocks accessible at low tide. In the west of Ireland it has traditionally been used to ease respiratory illness and to support convalescents. To make the remedy, take a small handful of Carrageen, (Chondrus crispus) and bring it to the boil in a pint of filtered water.
Reduce to a simmer and add any (or none) of the following: - ginger, cloves, sage, lemon juice, garlic, honey or brown sugar and allow it to simmer for about 10 minutes.
Strain through a sieve, pushing all the gloopy liquid through until all that remains in the sieve is the ginger and other added ingredients.
Drink straight away and enjoy the soothing, warming feeling.
Carrageen is an expectorant so it will help you to cough up and get rid of thick phlegm and it is a demulcent so it will soothe and "moisturise" the mucous membranes of the lungs. Carrageen is anti-microbial and anti-viral and contains Vitamin A, C, D, E and K as well as Vitamins B1 and B2 as well as the minerals zinc, calcium, iron and iodine. In the past it was used to build up and nourish convalescents because of the high nutritive content, either as a drink or as a jelly.
