Rolex GMT-Master II 16710 vs 116710 Comparison - Vintage Pre Ceramic Vs New Ceramic

Without a doubt, the Rolex GMT-Master watch is an icon in the world of luxury timepieces. Capable of displaying two time zones, the timepiece was an indispensable tool for global travelers from the 1950s and onwards. Today we're going to compare the Rolex GMT-Mater II 16710 to the Rolex GMT-Mater II 116710.

The Rolex GMT-Master watch collection was first introduced in 1954. The brand created one of the world’s first-ever GMT watches, responding to a request made by Pan AM Airlines for a reliable timepiece that that their crews could use on transatlantic flights. Watches from the GMT-Master collection are considered valuable collector’s timepieces, and many references appreciate with age. The GMT-Master II watch from Rolex was introduced in 1983 with the ref. 16760. Adding the functionality of an independently adjustable hour hand, the GMT-Master II was capable of displaying 3 time zones instead of 2, and the design quickly caught on with professional businessmen and Rolex connoisseurs alike.

The Rolex GMT-Master II 16710 was introduced 6 years later, and like its predecessors, it features a sleek black dial and an aluminum bezel insert. When the Rolex GMT-Master II collection was re-designed in 2007, the new ref. 116710 was fitted with an anti-corrosive Cerachrom ceramic bezel, a significantly more resilient and durable material than aluminum.

In terms of the case designs of the Rolex GMT-Master II 16710 and the 116710 - there are distinct differences that set the two models apart in aesthetics. The stainless steel case of the Rolex 16710 watch which spans a 40mm diameter and is fitted with a vibrant red/blue, red/black or all-black aluminum bezel insert with a Twinlock crown. Additionally, depending on the year of production, ref. 16710 watches can be found with holes or no holes on the lugs of the case and either tritium or LumiNova for the luminous material on its hour markers.

The Rolex GMT-Master II 116710 uses the company’s “Super Case” design, which features broader lugs and crown guards, along with thicker hands and hour markers for a noticeably more bold and chunky overall appearance. Additionally, the new "Super Case" on the GMT-Master II 116710 features an improved Triplock crown, rather than the Twinlock crown of its predecessor. The Cerachrom bezel inserts for the ref. 116710 come in a choice of either a black/blue "Batman" option or the original all-black version.

Both the Rolex GMT-Master II 16710 and 116710 boast an impressive 100-meter water-resistant case, and while both models offer only the option of a black dial, the reference 116710 features a “Maxi” dial which includes larger markers and hands, as well as Chromalight blue lume for easy readability in the dark.

For the most part, the Rolex GMT-Master II 16710 and the Rolex GMT-Mater II 116710 are powered by different movements, both created in-house by Rolex. The Caliber 3185 movement governs the 16710’s performance, although later production examples, along with all ref. 116710 GMT-Master II watches feature the updated Calibre 3186, which includes the addition of Rolex's Blue Parachrom hairspring. Despite their minor differences, both movements are COSC-certified chronometers and offer more-or-less identical functionality.

The Rolex GMT-Mater II 16710 watch comes on a choice of an Oyster or Jubilee Bracelet, while the 116710 is only available on the latest version of Rolex's Oyster bracelet. The 116710 bracelet is fitted with an Oysterlock safety clasp - a completely re-designed clasp that features the brand's Easylink 5mm comfort extension system. Differing from the flat three-piece link bracelet of the Oyster design, the Jubilee bracelets on ref. 16710 watches are all of the previous generations, and feature a rounded five-piece link design that was first introduced in 1945.

The broader “Super Case” design and Cerachrom ceramic bezel of the Rolex GMT-master II 116710 make for a bolder and more attention-demanding accompaniment for the wrist than the older Rolex GMT-Master II 16710 model. Whereas both designs vary in terms of their colored bezel insert options and the lume used for the indexes and indices, characteristics that both models share are features like their black dials, robust 100-meter water-resistant cases, and powerful self-winding mechanical movements for unbeatable performance.
