Sampaguita (Tessy Alfonso) was discovered by her husband, Nilo Santos. She was launched as the "female Mike Hanopol" at the New Moon Concert in 1977 held at the Folk Arts Theater. Percussionist Nick Boogie coined the screen name for her.
