In this lesson, we'll learn what is a noun phrase. Not only will you learn what is a noun phrase but also you will be able to teach to others, after watching this video.
What is a noun phrase?
A noun phrase is a phrase that acts as a noun in a sentence.
What is a phrase?
A phrase is a group of words that does not have a subject-verb combination; that always misses either of the two.
Ways to form a noun phrase:
1. Using pre-modifiers
2. Using post-modifiers
3. Using both pre and post modifiers
1. Noun phrases using pre modifiers
We have three things in pre-modifiers:
1. Determiners
2. Numbers
3. Adjectives
• Determiners
Words that determine the quantity of a noun. These include the following:
Articles
( a, an, the)
Noun phrases-
A book, an apple, the Taj Mahal
Possessive adjective
( my, your, his, her, their, our )
Noun phrases-
My car, your sister, his mother
Distributive adjectives
( this, that, these, those)
Noun phrases-
This guy, that car, these people, those girls
Quantifiers
(Some, many, a few, the few, a lot of, several etc )
Noun phrases- A lot of people, some friends, several leaders
• Numbers
one, two, first, second
Noun phrases-
two girls, three dogs, the first match, my second love
• Adjectives
small, big, intelligent, round, lazy
Noun phrases-
a big room, an intelligent person
2. Noun phrases using post-modifiers
1. Prepositional phrase
Noun phrases-
A girl with no tantrums.
The person in the black shirt.
2. Gerund phrase
Noun phrases-
The man standing next to you.
The girl talking to you.
3. Infinitive phrase
Noun phrases-
Students to teach English.
Clothes to wear.
4. Relative clause
Noun phrases-
The man who gave me some money.
The book that you gifted me last week.
3. Noun phrases using pre and post modifiers
The black dog that you have.
Pre-modifiers:
The (article)
Black (adjective)
Post modifier
That you have (relative clause)
Like a noun, it can take the following 4 positions:
1. Subject of the sentence
2. Object of the sentence
3. Object of the preposition
4. Subject complement
Examples:
(These boys) are my friends. (Subject)
I love (your younger sister.) (Object)
She is living in (a big house). (Object of the preposition "IN")
Nate is (my favourite fighter). (Subject complement)
