A pacemaker is a small device implanted in the chest or abdomen to help control abnormal heart rhythms. The average life span of a pacemaker battery is typically between 5 to 15 years, depending on the model, usage, and how often it needs to generate electrical pulses. Modern pacemakers are designed with advanced battery technologies to last longer. Still, the battery life will vary based on the individual’s heart condition and how frequently the device is used to correct irregular rhythms. Pacemaker replacement is usually required when the battery is nearing the end of its life. This does not mean the entire pacemaker is replaced—typically, only the pulse generator (the component containing the battery and electronic circuitry) is replaced, while the leads remain intact if they are in good condition. Pacemaker replacement is generally a minor surgical procedure performed under local anesthesia and takes about 1 to 2 hours. Recovery is usually quick, and most patients can resume normal activities within a few days. Regular follow-ups ensure that the new pacemaker functions correctly and continues to support the heart effectively.
