Digital Forensics Lab: Creating a Forensic Image of a Virtual Machine in Autopsy

In this digital forensics lab, we walk through how to create and analyze a forensic image of a virtual machine using Autopsy. This project shows how to create a new case, document case details, locate the virtual machine disk file, add the VM image as a data source, and begin the ingest process inside Autopsy.

This is a great hands-on exercise for students learning virtual machine forensics, evidence acquisition, forensic case setup, and image ingestion workflows. It also highlights an important real-world lesson in digital forensics: imaging and ingest can take a significant amount of time, especially when working with virtual machine disk files, so careful planning and documentation matter throughout the process.
