A catastrophic fire broke out at the Mawpiya Sevana Elderly Care Home in Anguruwatota town near Horana, western Sri Lanka, resulting in a tragic disaster that claimed the lives of at least twelve residents and left eight others hospitalized with severe injuries. The massive blaze erupted late on Wednesday evening, quickly tearing through the facility which housed vulnerable individuals, including those suffering from mental illnesses. A swift and courageous joint rescue operation involving local firefighters, police officers, army soldiers, and brave neighborhood volunteers successfully managed to evacuate fifty-one residents from the burning structures safely. Survivors were immediately assisted onto buses and relocated to a nearby school for temporary shelter and medical evaluation. Following the incident, the facility's director was arrested on suspicion of negligence while an official probe is ongoing today.
