It's been a good year for screens and digital assistants. With Google releasing the Nest/Home Hub earlier this year, Amazon has risen to the challenge and released the Echo Show 8. Full screen Echo's are not a new thing for Amazon. Customers previously had the full sized Echo Show ( both gen1 and gen2) as well as the smaller Echo Show 5 to choose from.

Note: They also had the Echo Spot. Don't buy this device. Better options for less money.

In my mind, the Echo Show 8 really completes the Goldielocks trio in Amazon's Digital Display offerings. The Echo Show gen2 is large. It's got a better camera, a larger footprint, and includes the zigbee radio in addition to the regular Amazon Alexa features. The Echo Show 5 is smaller, with a single speaker and will take up less space on your counter tops. The Echo Show 8 is really in the middle and although it doesn't include the zigbee radio like it's big brother, the extra speaker and the screen real-estate are definitely worth a little extra money if the Echo Show 8 fits into the space that you have in mind.

If you’re already in the Amazon Echo ecosystem, you’ll find the Echo Show 8 fits simply slides into your existing home with little effort. I love the fact that they have made it possible for customers to go through a complete setup without having to pick up their phone or tablet. As well, the attention to detail around giving constant feedback during the setup process is really wonderful to see.

For those of us with family members who are less technically incline; I can see sending an echo show 8 as a gift and not worrying about getting the inevitable tech-support calls that usually come with that kind of gift.

The speakers in the Echo Show 8 aren’t as great as the full Echo Show, bu they are better than the Echo Show 5 and will be good enough for the majority of smaller rooms as long as you're not pushing the devices to max volume. The multi-room audio features included in all of the Amazon branded Echo devices means that you don't have to worry about cranking up your volume but instead can simply stream your favourite tracks from multiple Echo's at the same time. You’re not going to use it to run parties ( although you could use the optional audio out connect to your existing sound system if that interest you. )

If you've got the real estate, the Echo Show 8 is a great device at a great price.
