Herman the German & The Battle of Teutoburg Forest

The year is 9 AD. Three highly professional veteran Roman Legions consisting of a total of 20,000 men under the command of provincial governor Publius Quintcilius Varus are making their way through Germanic territory east of the Rhine, deep within the ancient and mysterious Teutoburg Forest. Varus is on his way to put down what he thinks is a local revolt to the north, within the territory of just one of the many recently pacified tribes set to make up the population of the new province he has been organising in the area. Varus is content with the situation. For the most part, the Germans seem pacified and the process of provincialising them is going well, besides a few minor incidents where the new subject people have taken issue with the new taxations imposed upon them.

Just as the Romans enter a particularly boggy area with steep tree covered ridges on either side of them, they suddenly come under attack. Tribal drums and low ominous war chants reverberate from deep within the forest as the terrified Romans do their best to form up into defensive positions and to catch a glimpse of the mysterious warriors harrying them with projectile weapons from the tree line above. Moments later, as hordes of woad covered tribal warriors come streaming down the hillside towards the column before them, Varus realises the horrible mistake he had made, and the impending reality of his situation. He has been betrayed, by the man he considered to be his friend, the supposedly Romanised Germanic auxiliary commander who has served in the army for the last nine years, since being taken hostage as a child. That man was Arminius, better known to the Germans as Hermann
