Gloucester Cathedral is a must see place to visit for all fans of the Harry Potter movies, it has beautiful architecture and is also steeped in history. Gloucester Cathedral was used as a location in 3 of the Harry Potter films when it doubled as Hogwarts School of Wizardry. You can actually walk in the footsteps of Harry, Ron and Hermione as you stroll around the Cloister Walk. The films made here based on author J.K.Rowling’s novels were:
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

Harry Potter filming took place in the Cathedral’s cloisters and Garth. You can actually walk in Harry, Ron and Hermione’s footsteps as you walk around the Cloisters. My film takes you on a full tour and shows you every location that appears in the films. Among the Harry Potter actors who were present at Gloucester Cathedral, during filming were: Daniel Radcliffe as Harry, Emma Watson as Hermione Grainger, Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley, Alan Rickman as Snape, Richard Harris as Dumbledore, Maggie Smith as Professor McGonagall, Kenneth Brannagh as Professor Lockhart and David Bradley as Argus Filch.

As J.K.Rowling wrote, “The stories we love best do live in us forever, so whether you come back by page or by the big screen, Hogwarts will always be there to welcome you home.” A magical place to visit for fans of the Harry Potter films and books.

The Cathedral is also steeped in history and is an interesting place to explore. It was originally the home and place of worship for an order of Benedictine monks since 679AD. It saw the only coronation of a monarch, outside of London, since 1066, when Henry lll was crowned in the Cathedral in 1216 and Edward ll is buried here, after he was murdered in 1327.

There are a number of guided tours, you can admire the views on a tour of the Cathedral’s Tower or go behind the scenes of the Cathedral on a Crypt tour or Library tour. There is a great café located off the cloisters, called “The Monk’s Kitchen’, for a meal or tea and cake. The café also has toilets.

Normal Cathedral opening times 7:30am – 6pm daily. I recommend you check the Cathedral website before you visit to see opening times and what is currently open.

If you travel by car there are a number of car parks within a 5 minute walk of the cathedral.
