Cardinals gathered in Rome's Saint Mary Major Basilica on Sunday (April 27) to pray and pay tribute to the late Pope Francis at his tomb. His coffin was taken there on Saturday (April 26) after his funeral Mass in St. Peter's square, with around 150,000 people lining the route through the heart of the city to say their farewells. No pope had been laid to rest outside the Vatican in more than a century, but Francis opted for burial in Saint Mary Major Basilica, the church he used to visit before and after every overseas trip.
