The cipher was solved. After 51 years — and the first line it revealed was why it would never matter.

The Zodiac Killer sent 21 documented communications to police and newspapers between 1969 and 1974. Three were ciphers, which he presented as keys to his identity. The first was cracked in eight days. The second — the Z340 — resisted all attempts for fifty-one years.

In December 2020, three amateur analysts confirmed its solution. The FBI verified their work within days. And the decoded text stated, plainly, that the author had never intended to be found.

The case files of the San Francisco Police Department, Vallejo PD, and Napa County remain open. No identification has been confirmed.
