Hello, neighbors, it's Brad here at etrailer. And today, we're taking a look at installing the Demco base plate on a 2024 Ford Maverick. Now this is what your base plate is gonna look like when it's installed, and the great part about this one is it slides right in between the grill slats, so that means you don't really have to trim anything out to get this to fit. And it works actually around the shutter, so that's really nice. With other brands out there, Roadmaster has another option for the Maverick that actually looks very similar. That installation's a little bit more involved.

I will say they do have mounting brackets that makes it a little bit easier for mounting up the components, as I did kind of have to fabricate a little bit to get our six-pole diode wiring as well as our breakaway switch mounted up. But overall, a very clean look. You know, as you're going down the road, this is kind of what it's gonna look like. There's also caps included to keep any dust, dirt, corrosion, or road grime from building up in there. And when you are ready to tow your vehicle down the road, your arms just simply slide in, rotate, and then you'll put your linchpin in place.

And once those are in place, you can get the rest of your components set up. And with your base plate, it's gonna be the structural mounting point that goes to the frame of the vehicle, allowing you to tow it, but also you're gonna get the spots to hook up to your safety chains as well. So as far as checking out this, it is something you're gonna want to take a look at when piecing together your flat tow setup is going to be the height of your base plate in reference to the height of your hitch. So this one, for instance, comes in at right about 14 1/2 inches, and that's gonna be the measurement that you're gonna want that tow bar to be nice and level. So measure from the center of the hitch pin hole on your RV to the ground, compare that, and it should be within a three inch window.

And that way your tow bar's gonna be nice and level and be safe to tow down the road. If yours is a big difference, you might want to take a look at a high/low adapter to get that nice and leveled out. There's gonna be five main components required when flat towing a vehicle, and the first one on the vehicle side is gonna be the base plate, and that's gonna structurally mount to the frame of the vehicle, creating the mounting points for a lot of your other components and allowing you to safely tow your vehicle down the road. Your connection point between your base plate and the hitch on the RV is gonna be your tow bar, and that's just going to take it down the road just as the coupler of a trailer would be. Now going along with that, you also have safety cables.

So in case of a disconnect, those cables are gonna keep everything attached. Now, in case of a catastrophic disconnect, there's a breakaway switch, which is gonna be required on any vehicle to have a braking system, and the breakaway switch is part of that. And that way, if a catastrophic disconnect happened, it's gonna pull the cable, applying the brakes on the vehicle. That way it's not rolling down the road. Now our system that we have today is the Stay-IN-Play duo, which requires tapping into diode wiring, and diodes are generally gonna be something that you're gonna install on any modern flat tow system, and that simply just takes the light signal from the RV and sends it to the taillights on the towed vehicle, giving you your running lights, turn signals, as well as brake lights, keeping you safe and legal. Now this vehicle in particular, something else that you're gonna want to pick up is a brake light relay, and that's just gonna make sure that our signals don't get confused when we have our brakes applied as well as our turn signal because it is a combined system. But other than that, that's gonna be the basics to get you going down the road. Now when it comes to the installation of the base plate, this one isn't too tricky. Most base plates, you are gonna be removing that fascia, and this one's no different. There's a little bit of trimming required. And the fascia on this vehicle's a little bit different, just in the fact that you'll have this trim that goes on the headlight, and also you do need to be a little bit careful on the edges where the fascia meets the front fender.
