After the Bondi attack, the Australian state passed tougher new gun and anti-terror laws

Australia’s most populous state passed sweeping new gun and anti-terror laws on Wednesday after the Bondi Beach mass shooting. New South Wales lawmakers tightened firearm rules, banned public display of terror symbols, and expanded police powers to limit protests.

The Terrorism and Other Legislation Amendment Bill was passed after an emergency parliamentary session. A national database tracking individuals charged under hate crime laws across all Australian jurisdictions was launched following the Bondi shooting.

The New South Wales government, where the shooting occurred, recalled parliament to introduce what it described as the toughest firearm reforms in the country. Under the new rules, individuals will be limited to owning four guns, or up to 10 for exempt groups such as farmers.

Premier of New South Wales, Chris Minns, says people in Sydney can expect to get more armed police officers on the streets during the Christmas and New Year celebration time. Minns said controversial protest laws allowing authorities to restrict public gatherings for up to three months after a terrorist attack would take effect from today.
