How to Turn Off Instagram DM End to End Encryption

Hey there guys, welcome back to another video. Today I’ll be showing you how to manage Instagram DM end-to-end encryption in 2026 and what actually changes with encrypted chats.

As of 2026, Instagram generally does not require users to manually turn off end-to-end encryption. In fact, encrypted chats (often shown with a padlock icon) are used for specific private conversations, and most users will not see a global toggle to disable them. To find these chats, open Instagram and tap the DM icon at the bottom of your screen. Look for any conversation that shows a padlock icon—this indicates it is end-to-end encrypted. These chats have extra privacy protection compared to standard messages. If you want to remove a specific encrypted conversation, you can long-press the chat and select the delete option. This will remove the chat from your inbox. After that, you can start a new conversation with the same person, which will use standard Instagram messaging instead of the encrypted mode.
