KSP - Crewed Mars Mission - RSS/RO
It has been a long road and after a year of designing, testing, launching, flying, maneuvering, docking, landing, driving and so on, finally my Mars mission is complete. And so is a 45 minute long video about the mission. A bit long, but I wanted to include every part of the mission, starting with Cargo Landers launching from Earth and ending with the crew splashing down. I decided not to split the video into two parts, because then the 24 minute long part 1 would barely have any crewed action on Mars.
I recommend watching the whole thing, but for the really impatient, here are the timestamps:
00:15 - Cargo Landers launches
05:36 - Cargo Landers arrive on Mars
10:01 - Mars Transfer Vehicle assembly in LEO
16:39 - Crew launch, departure to Mars and arrival in Mars orbit
21:11 - Crew landing on Mars
24:36 - Mars surface logistics
29:28 & 33:55 - Mars surface exploration
37:39 - departure from Mars
40:50 - Earth
44:10 - End Credits
I used Kerbal Space Program version 1.2.2 with RSS, RO and RP-0 mods. The mission was of course completed on my good old (4 year old) RP-0 career save. Most of the vehicles are based on various NASA proposals for a crewed Mars mission. Mars Transfer Vehicle is based heavily on the one proposed for a Consellation Mars mission, my addition are the drop tanks, to allow reuse of the same MTV for multiple Mars missions. Cargo Landers are based on a more recent proposals of sending heavy cargo to Mars via an SLS rocket, a solar electric propulsion stage and a methane/lox landing stage. I didn't need solar electric stages, because I had a better rocket than the SLS. The Ares VI rocket, is a better version of SLS, designed for less jobs programs creation or keeping the senators happy and more to actually accomplish the task of sending heavy cargo into deep space. I have also split Mars descent and Mars ascent between two vehicles, because a combined descent/ascent vehicle would have a mass of at least 70 tons. And I'm not dragging that one along docked to the MTV.
More detail about the vehicles I used and how the mission unfolded:
