Before Rome, a warrior culture flourished in northern Italy whose fighters adorned their shields with monumental bronze discs — and this piece has survived 3,000 years.

This monumental phalera (diameter approx. 36 cm) from the Villanova Culture, 9th–8th century BC, is one of the most impressive objects of early Iron Age metalwork from Italy. The shallow convex bronze disc features concentric zones of pointillé punches, eye circles, zigzag and diamond patterns — fully intact original substance with a beautiful, glossy green patina.
The solid cast conical boss at the centre, the paired attachment holes at the rim and the precise craftsmanship make this a key object of the Villanova Culture — the direct precursor of Etruscan civilisation and thus of the entire Italic high culture.
