DAY OF ATONEMENT—Live Worship with Steve Kuban + Take Me Into the Holy of Holies, Glory To The Lamb

Torah Portion #29 Acharei Mot (“After the death”) begins in the shadow of judgment (after the deaths of Aaron’s sons) and reveals the sacred process of Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) on the 10th day of the month Tishri. The high priest enters the Holy of Holies only once a year with sacrificial blood to atone for himself and the nation. Two goats form the center of the ritual: one is slain as a sin offering, and the other—the scapegoat—has the sins of Israel confessed over it and is sent into the wilderness, symbolizing the removal of sin.

The Torah portion then shifts to a call for holy living, especially in moral purity, warning Israel not to imitate the corrupt practices of Egypt and Canaan. The message is that forgiveness and holiness are inseparable: God provides atonement, and His people must live set apart.

From a Messianic perspective, these elements point directly to Yeshua (Jesus) as their fulfillment. He embodies both roles of the two goats: as the one who is sacrificed, He provides atonement through His blood; and as the one who “bears away” sin, He carries it outside the camp, removing it completely (Hebrews 13:11–12). Unlike the earthly high priest who enters once a year, Yeshua, the greater High Priest, enters the heavenly Holy of Holies once for all with His own blood, securing eternal redemption (Hebrews 9). The restricted access into God’s presence in Acharei Mot highlights the barrier caused by sin, which Messiah removes—opening the way for direct relationship with God. Finally, the call to holiness in daily life finds its deeper fulfillment in Messiah, who not only atones for sin but also transforms His people to live in righteousness, set apart from the world.

The final chapter of today’s Torah Portion from Leviticus 18 is basically about how God wants His people to live differently, especially when it comes to relationships and sexual behavior. God tells Israel not to copy what people were doing in places like Egypt and Canaan, because those cultures had a lot of harmful and immoral practices. Instead, they’re supposed to follow His standards.

Most of the chapter lists relationships that are off-limits, especially within families (like parents, siblings, aunts/uncles, etc.), because those kinds of relationships break healthy boundaries and damage people and society. It also warns against other behaviors like adultery (cheating on a spouse), certain sexual practices tied to pagan worship, and sacrificing children to idols. The big idea is that these actions aren’t just personal choices—they actually corrupt a whole society.

The chapter ends by saying that the nations before Israel were judged for doing these things, and Israel could face the same consequences if they follow that path.

So the message is: God sets boundaries not to restrict people, but to protect them and keep their lives and communities healthy and set apart.
