ANNIE RETURNS?! Eren & Zeke’s Plan Explained | Attack on Titan Season 4 Episode 9 Breakdown

This video explains episode 9 of Attack on Titan season 4, in which Annie Leonheart returns to the series for the first time since AOT season 1! Episode 9 of AOT the Final Season is called Brave Volunteers. The episode primarily focuses on flashbacks to the year 851, which Armin narrates. These flashbacks shows how Zeke, Yelena and Onyankopon started working with Paradis island. It also explains the reason behind the battle at Fort Slava which we saw during AOT S4 episode 1. Additionally, the Beast Titan arrives on Paradis in the present day (under the supervision of Levi).

Episode 9 of AOT the final season was called brave volunteers.

It begins with Armin back on Paradis island after they escaped from Marley in the last episode. Present day Armin reminisces about the first time Marley sent their survey ships to the island and thanks to Pieck’s words in the last episode, we already know Yelena was part of that expedition. As they progressed they are ambushed by the attack titan, who appears out the water and Eren lifts the ship with his bare hands.

In the flashback Eren began to show his first signs of discontent, when he points out that Paradis need to do something to protect themselves. While Armin seemed to be optimistic about the future, Eren was concerned that Marley’s military could destroy them in a real battle.

At that point in the series, Eren and Zeke were the only people who knew how Eren could use the full powers of the founding titan. Obviously a lot of people had already seen Eren use the founding titan once before, but he never told anyone how he was able to do it, despite realising that it was because he touched a titan of royal blood.

With the full power of the founding titan, Paraids would be able to activate the rumbling and defend the island.

Naturally many people were against the idea of trusting Zeke Yaeger but Hanje realised that it was practical to work with the anti-Marlyean volunteers. Thanks to Yelena and Onyankopon’s help, Paradis was able to neutralise 30 more Marlyean ships over the next 3 years.

The episode then progressed to an interesting moment involving Niccolo and Sasha. Nicollo was the captive marlyean soldier that was threatened by Levi in the beginning and here we find out that he is also a chef. He was forced to prepare a feast of seafood which Sasha eats, even to the point where Sasha is crying at the food. Back then Armin really thought they could change something, as many Marlyeans were able to overcome their prejudice against eldians when given sufficient time. He believed that threatening the world with the rumbling was not something they had to do, if they could talk to other nations once the port was completed.

However, being the pragmatist that he is, Eren wasn’t buying into Armin’s optimism, as most of the Marlyeans who arrived on the island still hated eldians and were being kept in prison cells. Eren knew that the worlds perceptions of eldians is hard to change.

The anime then gives a small preview of man bun Eren, before moving over to Mikasa grieving at the cemetery. Niccolo had arrived to find out if Sasha really died.

Eren and Zeke were immediately separated once they arrived on Paradis island, as they can’t yet be trusted to use the power of the founding titan. On the airship the two from making contact, as Eren had his arms restrained by rope and Zeke couldn’t do anything because his limbs had been chopped of by Levi. Now that they’re on Paradis, Zeke was put under Levi’s supervision, and was transported to the giant forest of trees. Zeke is being kept here until it’s decided what to do with him and eren, but in the meantime he does seem to show some concern for Gabi and Falco. Those two had been locked up in prison since arriving in the island, so not much to say regarding that, other than Gabi is clearly organising a kill list in her head.

The next thing I’m gonna explain relates to the anti-marlyean volunteers such as Yelena, Onyankopon, not to mention the Marlyean engineer that helped build the port. It’s been no secret since the beginning that the anti-marlyean volunteers have been working for Zeke, and so with the man himself now arriving on the island, commandeer Pixis decides to have these guys restrained.

The titan transformation serum on the table was stolen from Marley, presumably whilst Yelena was undercover.

In a dimly lit room Armin continues to talk to Annie.
