Open Space: Lucki | Mass Appeal

Chicago rapper Lucki wants you to know that he's no Soundcloud rapper. He's been cosigned by Pharrell, managed by Scott Vener and on wax with FKA Twigs-check the Soundscan! He sat down for the latest episode of MASS APPEAL's "Open Space" to make that clear, also discussing Chicago's scene-or lack thereof-and just how fun it is to be on Xanax.

Formerly known as Lucki Eck$, Lucki has been making waves for years now off the strength of standout cuts like "Lowlife" and "Count on Me," which have collectively racked up more than 1 million views on YouTube. Following a significant hiatus, during which time he dropped the "Eck$" from his moniker, Lucki dropped his 'Watch My Back' mixtape in May, a refreshing package of his trademark drowsy anthems and wonky, playful verses that is still very much in demand. His return has been successful by any indication-a few of the tracks on the tape have already been streamed over 1 million times-and for just over five minutes, he divulges some of the things he's learned along the way.

"I don't fuck with Xanax anymore," starts Lucki. "This is why I started getting into Xans. Some terrible big homies, I popped a Xan and I remember feeling so free. That's why people get into so much trouble of Xanax. Because you don't think about consequences. And me? I was just overboard. Like, this shit is fun."

What isn't as fun for Lucki is listening to people try to dictate where he should take his music sonically. People told him that he "couldn't make that alternative trap stuff" anymore when he dropped 'Watch My Back,' and that simply isn't true. "Yes, I can," replies Lucki to critics. "It's a mix of everything in one. I love this project… I appreciate everybody fucking with it."
