Why Does My Microphone Only Go To One Side of my Camera's Audio? (FIX)

How do you make your microphone go to both sides of your audio track in your camera? Here's how to fix it before and after any recording. Gear used linked below & all my gear at kit.co/rayortega

If you have a microphone that is only sending audio to one side of the stereo track in your video camera (DLSR, mirrorless, etc.) then you probably have a mono microphone. That is, a microphone, most likely a lavalier/lapel (lav.) mic., that is mono and when you plug it into a microphone input on a camera which records a stereo track, then you only get audio to the left side of the audio track.

To fix this, you can buy a cheap adapter that will send audio to both the left and right side (dual mono) or if you have already recorded the audio and need to fix it in your video editor, then here's how to do that in both Premiere Pro and FCPX.

In Premiere Pro, you can use the effect, "fill right with left" on your audio track and this will send the audio that was recorded only on the left channel to the right channel making your audio dual mono which means it will come out of both speakers or both sides of your headphones when played back.

The better way to do this in Premiere Pro is to right-click on the audio track – audio channels – select Left in the right channel box. I prefer this method because it's faster but also because now your waveform that shows in your timeline will display waveforms on both the left and right of your audio track.

In FCPX, select the audio track to be fixed, navigate to the audio settings and change the track from stereo to dual mono. That's it.

One cool feature having a stereo track to record to, is the ability to buy a stereo splitter and insert two microphones allowing you to record two tracks of audio, one on the left and one on the right. In post production you can break this stereo track apart into two mono tracks and now you have to separate tracks of audio which can be individually processed.
