World War One War Crimes: The Baralong Incident...
For as long as Humans have banded together to wage conflicts with others, there have been codes of conduct governing one’s actions. Sometimes these codes of conduct were based upon personal opinions and beliefs as to how a battle should be conducted and as Humanity advanced in culture and technology, so too did these opinions which then became rules and laws. The legitimacy of one’s actions in war has long been a major issue, armies have had to contend with. Even in countries where the rule of international law is considered paramount, there have been cases where in desperate circumstances, said laws have been broken without repercussion.
Two problems have always been a thorn in the side of those who believe in there being laws and treaties governing conduct during wartime. The first is that laws are often open to interpretation and so two combatants can act totally opposed to one another yet still argue they were in the right. This of course leads to the other problem; why should one country continue following the rule of law if their enemy does not?
In this episode, we are going to examine a case from the Great War in which the rules of international law were brought into question in order to defeat a seemingly merciless enemy that acted without conscience. This is the story of the Baralong Incident.
