Freedom of Speech vs Expression | Article 19(1)(a) Explained | UPSC Polity | Dr. Rajesh Mishra

What is the Difference Between Speech and Expression? | Article 19 Explained 🇮🇳

Is speech the same as expression? Not exactly.

🗣 Speech refers to what we verbally communicate.
🎬 Expression goes beyond speech — it includes writing, films, art, social media posts, symbolic acts, and even the right to remain silent.

📜 Under Article 19(1)(a) of the Indian Constitution, citizens are guaranteed the Freedom of Speech and Expression, which includes:

✔ The right to dissent
✔ The right to criticize the government
✔ Freedom of the press
✔ The right to express ideas in multiple forms

Democracy is not just about “One Person, One Vote.”
It is equally about the freedom to think, disagree, and express.

For serious students of UPSC, UGC NET, and Political Science, understanding this distinction is essential.
