Michael Sanderling and the Dresdner Philharmonic perform Dmitri Shostakovich’s
Symphony No. 15 in A major, op. 141 at the Kulturpalast Dresden. The concert was held on February 13, 2019, the memorial day for the allied bombing that destroyed Dresden in 1945. That is why there’s a small round of applause at the end of the symphony.

Russian composer and pianist Dmitri Shostakovich (1906 -1975) wrote 15 string quartets, instrumental concerts, stage works and 15 symphonies among, other things. His Symphony No. 15 in A major, op. 141 is the last one Shostakovich composed. He wrote it in 1971. On January 8, 1972 it was premiered under the direction of his son, Maxim Shostakovich. This symphony is often seen as the quintessence of his life.

The first motif of the first movement (es-as-c-h-a in German spelling) represents an encrypted depiction of the Russian name “Sascha.” In the second movement, the brass section represents the memory of a funeral march. The fourth movement is mainly characterized by polyrhythmic elements and percussive instrumentation and integrates the "Valkyrie" motif from Part 2 of Richard Wagner’s opera "The Ring of the Nibelung" as well as quotes from Wagner’s "Tristan and Isolde."

Michael Sanderling’s name is associated with great musical and technical ambition, laser-focused rehearsal work, and highly intense concert events. In his years spent as Principal Conductor of the Dresden Philharmonic (2011 – 2019), he recorded all of Ludwig van Beethoven and Dmitri Shostakovich’s symphonies on CD.
