#Shorts How does a gas furnace work? What are the basics of the furnace? Direct ignition gas furnaces have several parts. The inducer motor, pressure switch, gas control valve, hot surface ignitor, flame sensor and the blower fan. If one of these components fails then the furnace will not work properly. This might prevent the furnace from starting, or cause it to cycle on and off. Alternatively it might not ignite.
