**WARNING: THIS VIDEO CONTAINS SCENES OF IMPLIED/EXPRESS PHYSICAL AND SEXUAL VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN**

[1080pHD + headphones]

I almost didn’t go through with this video because the topic is extremely upsetting, but recent discussions and events reminded me that these things need to be spoken about.

In Ireland, the last few weeks have been dominated by discussion as to consent and how complainants of rape are treated once they bring their case to the attention of the criminal justice system. It has been exhausting, and frustrating, and draining, and I have been left in tears more than once. I didn’t think I ought to make this video because it’s upsetting, because people who have experienced this sort of abuse or violence may not wish to see this on YouTube, and for that I apologise. Furthermore, I am completely aware that there are whole groups of people who like to aggressively shut down any discourse on these matters, who discount rape culture and the prevalence of domestic and sexual violence, and for that reason, comments on this video are going to be set to approval first.

The topics of Round One of The OGC’s editing contest included Feminism, and while it was appealing at first to just do a multifemale vid celebrating badass ladies or whatever, I realised I’d be doing myself an injustice in wasting this opportunity. My undergraduate research examined our police response to domestic abuse in Ireland, my Masters thesis centred upon the damage that rape stereotypes can have upon trials, and my PhD research will hopefully examine consent. It felt important to me that I focus on these topics, no matter how upsetting or divisive. The show with the visual representative of 2 women in 20 being attacked was my way of representing Irish statistics on rape (the SAVI Report in 2002 found that 13% of Irish women had experienced rape/attempted rape, and a 2013 survey of students found that 8.34% of women had experienced such). So, I was attempting to represent that average of 10%.

Throughout the video, I looked at the ways in which women are often seen to be “asking for it”, through their dress, consumption of alcohol, habits, lack of resistance, etc. I feel that violence against women is so damn common in film and television, with abuse and violations often reduced to plot point, it was upsettingly easy to find footage for this.

For the record, I want to make it clear that this in no way suggests that women are the sole victims of such abuse, and I hope that you don’t think so. Men are routinely victimised through domestic and sexual abuse, but this abuse often goes unreported due to social stigmas. Men are not the sole aggressors of violence, nor are women the sole victims. I’ve made sure to include resources for men in the section below.

I’ve done some quick research on helplines and useful websites for anyone who is looking to speak to someone about domestic and sexual abuse, or is looking to read more on the topic. I’ve only included my own country, the UK, and the US. So, if you’d like me to add any additional resources, I’d be happy to, just let me know!
