Pro-Palestinian Encampment at USC Faces Tension With The Department of Public Safety (DPS)
Tensions escalated at the pro-Palestinian encampment at USC as officers from the university’s Department of Public Safety (DPS) forcibly removed tents and student belongings from what was termed a “liberated zone,” established at Alumni Park early Wednesday morning.
At approximately 11:40 a.m., DPS detained a protester wearing a legal observer vest, whose identity and student status remain undisclosed. Protesters chanted “let him go” as they gathered around the DPS car where he was being held. Shortly after, DPS requested backup LAPD riot police, who had been waiting at the Downey Way entrance.
By 12:50 p.m., the university had initiated lockdown procedures, restricting access to various buildings. Campus is now closed to the public, and entry requires a university ID.
