RAM 1500 Off-Road 4WD LOCK TEST (With Open Diff's) | Not Really a 4x4...
Today we are once again testing my RAM 1500 4WD LOCK off-road. I high center my truck over a little ditch and show how 4x4 Lock doesn't necessarily mean all 4 wheels are going to receive power. I also turn off traction control and show you guys how in this off-road situation it won't make a difference.
Lastly, I revisited the old brake trick and try to use my brake to try and force power to all 4 wheels. I end up actually surprising myself and it seems like it's certainly possible that brake pressure could help you out of a 4x4 stuck condition off-road. Now this is just one real world off-road example. when I was in the snow and attempted to use brake pressure to help me out of a stuck situation when in 4WD LOCK it didn't help.

I wanted to visit this topic with my RAM 1500 because first of all you guys seem to like this stuff. Secondly, because the wording RAM uses such as "4WD LOCK" it seems to deceive a lot of folks. In reality, this simply is 4 HIGH. The only thing that is locked is the transfer case. Meaning that in most situations only 2 wheels will be receiving power unless you have some kind of Limited Slip Differential or Locking differential in either or both front and rear differentials. This high center test is really good visually, showing how torque takes the path of least resistance and how only 2 wheels will receive power.
This has NOTHING to do with RAM being a bad truck. Any manufacturer would have the exact same results with two open differentials. If this truck had just one locker, this small obstacle would be a walk in the park for this truck.
So hopefully you guys learned and thing or two and I'm happy that the brake trick showed up success because everyone talks about how it has helped them get their trucks unstuck.
