Record flooding in Brazil, dams collapsing from water, Porto Alegre in danger.

The damage caused by heavy rains that have hit Rio Grande do Sul since the beginning of the week continues to worsen. This Friday, the 3rd, the historic center of Porto Alegre was flooded with water after a breach in the Casa de Bombas, the system responsible for returning rainwater to the Guaiba River.

The level of Guaiba is expected to reach 5 meters this Friday, which will be a historical record. The river is rising at a rate of about 8 cm per hour, and rain continues to fall in the region.

The problem in the pump room was with valve 3, which could not withstand the water pressure and eventually broke. There are a total of 14 locks on 24 km of external dams with 23 pumping stations. The system is an additional protection for a concrete wall in the historical center of Porto Alegre, built after a severe flood in 1941.
