My guest this week is Dr. April Anson. Dr. Anson is an Assistant Professor of Public Humanities at San Diego State University, core faculty for the Institute for Ethics and Public Policy, and affiliate faculty in American Indian Studies, and was a Mellon postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pennsylvania with the Penn Program in Environmental Humanities. In 2012, with the help of many friends and family, April built a tiny house on wheels out of mostly reclaimed material to live in for the length of her PhD studies. As she built and lived in the tiny, her experiences intersected with her areas of study and she published some of the first scholarly research on the tiny house movement, its radical potential, as well as the ways the movement reinforces the structures of power responsible for ecological crises, even when we aim to resist them.

Though she no longer lives in her tiny, her research continues to explore the connections between environmental traditions, white supremacy, and climate change in the structures of our everyday lives. In all, she remains committed to anti-racist and anti-colonial knowledge production and social movements.

These are the conversations about the intentionality of these spaces and how the home represents and speaks for the owner and supports how they see and want to show up in the world.
