We left Romania full of great memories. We continued to Bulgaria, the second country on our journey. We needed to keep moving and so stayed in Bulgaria for only four days. How naive in our decisions were we? - It turned out we were immensely naive, given the hospitality, splendid nature and great music we had encountered along the way! Please meet Iliya Ulchikovfrom a town of Chepelare. We met him in a tiny workshop hidden on a quiet street near the river after a series of coincidences and with the help of several townspeople.
Iliya Uchikov, an amazing bagpipe player and a master, is one of the last five makers of the traditional bagpipes of the Rhodope mountains. Iliya has perfected his craft over the last 35 years. His bagpipes are made exclusively from natural materials, which include goat skin, sheep and cow horns, plum and walnut wood as well as cork. This is, according to Ilya's own words, the reason why the sound of his bagpipes touches the human soul.
