Disability, as part of the human condition, has always been with us. But considering disability to be negative is a new concept, shaped by recent history. Professor of philosophy, author, and disability activist Patrick Standen unravels the complicated, fascinating, and controversial history of the concept of disability.

About Patrick Standen

A native of Vermont, Patrick Standen is a professor of philosophy at Saint Michael’s College and a lecturer in medical ethics at the University of Vermont. He is the author of Disability: The Genealogy of a Concept from Prehistory to Mid 20th Century, and numerous articles, essays, and poems. He is also President of the non-profit Northeast Disabled Athletic Association.
