Tensions are escalating in the Azov Sea as historical territorial claims, botched agreements, and heightened military presence threaten the stability of the region and Ukrainian economic endeavors. The appearance of six Russian vessels – patrol personnel-carriers and draught gunboats – in mid-June, as well as FSB border checkpoints through the Kerch Strait, are signs of increasing aggression and loss of strategic balance in the region.
