Traffic safety is, by many measures, a massively under-treated disease and a global public health crisis. Automation and robotics has long been viewed as a key antidote. But how safe will an increasingly automated future on the roads be?

Dr. Bryan Reimer, founder of the Advanced Vehicle Technologies Consortium at MIT, argues that our automated future can be very safe – but first we need to plan for the systems that will make it so.
