Driving the Coquihalla Highway, visiting Jamie Davis Towing, Hope, BC

While I was up in British Columbia for the holidays, my lady and I decided to drive the Coquihalla Highway (HWY 5) to the summit and then back down. We also stopped at Jamie Davis Heavy Recovery, in Hope, B.C.

I can tell you first hand, that the show does not do the road justice. It's very steep, narrow, and hazardous, even in dry conditions. Part of what makes it so rowdy is the quick, ever-changing weather and road conditions. The large hill going down into the snowshed is called the "Smasher" due to large pileups that happen on the steep downward slope.

According to Wikipedia: "Highway 5 is a 524 km (326 mi) north-south route in southern British Columbia, Canada. Highway 5 connects the southern Trans-Canada route (Highway 1) with the northern Yellowhead route (Highway 16), providing the shortest land connection between Vancouver and both Edmonton and Calgary. A portion of Highway 5 south of Kamloops is also known as the Coquihalla Highway; the northern portion is known as the Southern Yellowhead Highway. The Coquihalla section was a toll road until 2008."

Song: "Where have you gone?" by the Hashtones.
