LinuxCNC Monokrom: The Plasma Upgrade You Didn't Know You Needed.
The potential for significant enhancement to an existing plasma cutter is explored in this video. A detailed look is provided into how Monokrom's precision with high def features can elevate the capabilities of even a modest air plasma.
You can download Monokrom VCP for Linuxcnc here: https://www.qtpyvcp.com/showcase/plasma_vcps.html

Monokrom uses the QTPYVCP framework used by the highly regarded Probe Basic milling machine GUI for Linuxcnc. The original Monokrom screen design also inspired Qtplasmac. The black and yellow colour scheme has been designed to maximise visibility while wearing welding helmets and other protective eyewear. The HMI elements are designed to be more user friendly than QTplasmac and also includes some High Definition features due to its advanced hole cutting based on a database of machines and materials as well as a database of material thicknesses and dedicated hole processing parameters.
Most Hi Def plasma features are built into a matching CAM module but Linuxcnc does not have anything like this. Instead, when enabled, the gcode is run through a filter that strips out the leadins used by any holes and replaces the leadins with data driven leadins optimised for cut quality. Additionally, Monokrom includes small hole recognition and replaces these holes with spotting to allow hole position to be located for later drilling. The advantage of this is that spotting is done in a single pass with the main cutting operation. Other systems typically require the holes to be seperated out manually and done in a seperate spotting operation which increases cycle time.
Monokrom also supports prepiercing and ramp piercing operations for cutting thicker sheets. pre-piercing allows piercing to be done before the actual cutting to allow the sheet to be cleaned of dross for more friendly processing. Often, the piercing is done with old consumables which are replaced with new consumables for the actual cutting. Ramp piercing moves along the leadin while piercing. this creates a trench behind the torch that allows the dross to escape. This allows thicker than normal material to be pierced without being too hard on the consumables.
No other plasma control outside of high end Hi Def plasma cutters have anything like the feature set of Monokrom and it takes plasma cutting in LinuxCNC to the next level.
To install Monokrom it goes something like this:
Head over to the downloads page on Linuxcnc.org https://linuxcnc.org/downloads/ Download the ISO and burn it to a USB stick with BalenaEtcher https://linuxcnc.org/downloads/
Boot from the USB stick and install on a PC. That will give you a working version of LinuxCNC 2.94 on Debian Bookworm.
To get Monokrom, install QTPYVCP using their repository from here https://www.qtpyvcp.com/install/apt_install.html
You will see there is a command to install Monokrom down towards the end of the instructions
If you have problems, I am not the expert with QTPYVCP so ask for help on the Linuxcnc forum here https://forum.linuxcnc.org/qtpyvcp
