I wrote American Dream in response to conversations and experiences during a couple different house concert and small venues across the country. More on that below the lyrics.

The song is normally played by my band, Arrogant Sage, but is the first in a series of songs released as purely acoustic numbers.

For 20 long years I've been seeking asylum
My dream just a prison, my ambition a chain
Through my sacrifice I leave you this lesson

THE AMERICAN DREAM
The song is NOT political commentary except to say that both parties have largely abandoned the working middle-class since, at least, the early 1970's and really before then.

And no, I do not believe Trump moved that needle in a positive direction. While he spoke to the feeling of being overlooked facing the working and shrinking middle-class, the policies (and tax cuts) enacted further advanced the donor class. It is just corporatism under another banner.

My hope, my goal, is to express a shared understanding of the despair many feel. The answers are in group action to create better education, better, infrastructure programs, and a stronger collective experience regardless of where you come from.

It is in understanding that a strong and growing middle-class is better for a Democracy and better for people around the country and the world.
