Thank You Jean Kennedy Smith!

The Kennedy Center joins with the world in mourning the passing of Ambassador Jean Kennedy Smith, and we pay tribute to her legacy. Ambassador Smith holds a special place in our Kennedy Center family as both a former trustee and founder of VSA (formally Very Special Arts), the international organization of arts and disability. More than 40 years ago in founding VSA, she worked tirelessly to create opportunities for people with disabilities to learn through, participate in, and enjoy the arts. Her tremendous impact on the program touched millions of lives through her ardent belief in arts accessibility for all. As U.S. Ambassador to Ireland in the 1990s, she also played a key role in achieving peace in Northern Ireland. Her knowledge, expertise, and love of Irish culture was crucial to the Kennedy Center’s presentation of the ISLAND: Arts from Ireland (2000) and IRELAND 100 (2016) festivals, which combined, brought more than a thousand Irish artists to the nation’s capital. Her passionate work was unflagging, and demonstrated the power of the arts to cross social, ideological, and political boundaries.
