View From Panjshir Valley - Part 1

This was broadcast on Doordarshan in March 2000

The CNN IBN logo is misleading. Perhaps, it got affixed when I digitized the footage during my stint in CNN IBN from 2005 to 2009.

In Jan-Feb 2000 I travelled to Afghanistan to report on the Northern Alliance - Taliban conflict as a war correspondent for Worldview India, a programme broadcast on Doordarshan. I also got the opportunity to be the first Indian journalist to present the first television interview of the Northern Alliance Commander, Ahmad Shah Masood from his secret hideout to the Indian news television viewers.

When the Taliban swept into Kabul from Kandahar in 1996, Commander Masood organized the resistance movement with the help of India, Iran and Russia. In fact, at that time Robin Raphael as Assistant Secretary of State for South & Central Asia in the US State Department led the US government's efforts to set up diplomatic relations with the Taliban. In 1996 while the US and Pakistan supported and armed the Taliban (after having created, armed and supported the Afghan Mujahideen during the Cold War years as its proxy fighters against the Soviet Union's occupation army in Afghanistan), the Northern Alliance resistance was propped by an unique India-Iran-Russia alliance. But the Northern Alliance was fighting against a much better equipped Taliban militia.

The Northern Alliance never allowed Taliban to capture the beautiful Panjshir Valley. It was from here that the brave fighters of Northern Alliance took the fight to the Taliban controlled territories.

Five years later when 9/11 happened the US realized the heavy price it paid for planting the seed of international jihadi terrorism by creating and supporting Taliban. An important footnote of history that has been forgotten is that Commander Ahmad Shah Masood was assassinated by two Al Qaeda operatives masquerading as television journalists just two days before 9/11.

View From Panjshir Valley - Part 1 is a ground report in the year of 2000 documenting the little known and seen Afghan resistance battle of the brave Northern Alliance against the then US-Pakistan sponsored Taliban militia.

At that time there were no direct flights to Afghanistan because of the conflict. I flew from Delhi to Bishkek and from there to Dushanbe.
