How to scat like a pro - Solo Transcription - "Do It The Hard Way"
IMPROVISATION is one of the main ideas in Jazz and SCATSINGING is the language we use to translate our emotions into music.
As with learning any new language, we need to internalize grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation in order to speak it fluently.
When we stick to this comparison, we can say that
the GRAMMAR is HARMONY and RHYTHM
the VOCABULARY is the SCATSYLLABLES and
the PRONUNCIATION depends on the AREA that we visit (like Swing, Latin, Blues, etc.), there are plenty of different dialects.
So what is the best and quickest way for learning a foreign language?
It is to travel to a world where it is spoken.
With this video, we travel into the world of Chet Baker, who speaks with a very soft and unexcited tongue. He doesn't use too many different Syllables (Vocabularies) and applies them in the most beautiful way.
As a trumpet player, he scats like a brass instrument and that is where scatting originally comes from!
When you scat, you imitate a brass instrument.
I strongly recommend checking him out. It will open your eyes.
Learn the scat syllables like a new language and tell stories with your voice, while you follow my lines and the music with your eyes.
Breath easy and natural, don't stick to the syllables on the screen.
Train your ears, voice, and style with this fun chapter of improvisation.
