Before the rise of modern CBD's in the Philippines, the original financial center was in the city of Manila across Rio De Pasig from the Walled Garrison of Intramuros. Most businesses were concentrated in a street called Calle ESCOLTA and for many years, it remained the main financial center of the Philippines.

Calle Escolta was dubbed as "the wall street of the Philippines". National City Bank of New York which is now known as Citibank was there, HSBC was there along with so many other partnerships and corporate businesses.
