Dirt Jumping at this Indoor Bike Park

The last time I was really riding Dirt Jumps last was about 5 years about when I was in New Zealand riding Gorge Road. It was was also at this point I bought my first trail bike and that's when I fell in love with exploring new areas and getting out into nature. But with the Air Rec Centre (an indoor dirt jump bike park) not far away I'll also spend this winter getting back into it, ready for the summer.

This is the Air Rec center in Maple Ridge just outside of Vancouver, BC and I’m pretty sure this was something I dreamt of as a kid.

It has an indoor skatepark with a bunch of different features and multiple lines of dirt jumps all under one roof, so you can still ride even when everywhere is covered in snow.

Air Rec is split up into 3 areas: the skatepark takes up about a third and the dirt jumps take up about half the space. There are now 4 lines after a recent re-design, with a small line perfect for anyone on the left, some larger tabletop jumps, a line to the right of that with gaps and then then the mega booter line. I mean look at them - they’re huge! There’s even an air bag and resi ramp to learn new moves.

I came down with my buddies Brett and Louis and they were sending it.

I want to start my return to dirt jumps after 4 years of barely riding my hardtail, and the time is now. But the session started over on the air bag with Brett…

Watching Brett sending it upside down into the air bag was enough to get me wanting to actually get on my bike and punter my way through the small line.

As I said I’ve barely ridden this bike and the last time I was regularly riding dirt jumps was almost 5 years ago now. It’s works completely differently to a full suspension bike, so my expectations were pretty low - today was all about trying to get comfortable.

When I started to roll through the tabletop line, each lap was feeling better than before and I was focussing on getting my front wheel to the landing. After a bit I was even teasing that first step down and pulling up a little.

Near the end I was starting to pump the lip and pull up that little bit more so I know with more confidence I’ll get there.

I’ll be back here for sure and I’ll take you along with me as I try to get back into riding this, so if you haven’t already subscribed hit the button to follow my progress!

But Brett and Louis are of course way better than me...so why don’t we watch these guys ride instead?

We rounded off the day with a bit of time in the skatepark. You can always tell when you’re in a setup design for bikes, and it’s way better than a normal skatepark. Years ago I rode parks a bunch in the UK and I focussed on getting comfortable on quarter pipes. Next time I need to get out above the coping - another goal and you punters watching can hold me to that!

Having an indoor park like this is incredible. We saw some kids there that blew my mind with what they could do on a bike, and it’s parks like this that make that progression happen. Leave a like on this video if you want to see more dirt jumper videos and subscribing would be rad too….but don’t forget to watch this twice!
